| Quarterly meeting |
|
Seymour Land Conservation Trust will be holding it's quarterly meeting on Monday October 19th at 7:00 pm at the Henry Hamel Environmental building.
Below is a brief description of the presentation that Christina J. Kocer will be doing
for the Seymour Land Trust on Monday October 19 at 7pm.
An Emerging Threat: White-Nose Syndrome and Connecticut's Bats
Christina J. Kocer - CT Department of Environmental Protection, Wildlife
Division
Since the advent of the horror film, bats have been constantly used to
set a creepy mood, their erratic flying and sharp teeth exaggerated and
used to frighten us, and, Halloween would not be the same without their
image. This portrayal has given these fascinating creatures an
undeserved bad reputation. Bats are actually extremely beneficial
creatures that should be welcomed and not feared. And, bats need our
respect now, more than ever. Throughout the past 2 years, bats are
being faced with the largest ecological disaster of our time.
White-Nose Syndrome has been killing hundreds of thousands of bats
throughout the northeast and is spreading at unprecedented rates. This
presentation has been designed to provide some general information about
bats of Connecticut, clear up many common misconceptions, and provide
some information about what White-Nose Syndrome is, it's extremely rapid
spread, and what is being done about it.

| Ground Breaking for the addition to the land trust's environmental building has begun |
|
Ground Breaking for the addition to the land trust's environmental building has begun. The footings for the building have been dug and we expect to start pouring the concrete the week of December 9th. This much needed addition is going to be utilized to store equipment and material and expand the meeting room. We hope to start framing this building during the winter months ahead. Volunteers are always needed for various construction tasks; ie electrical, painting, sheetrock, taping, plumbing, heating and cooling, roofing, flooring etc. Please contact Frank Conroy at 888-6968 or Alex Danka 464-4345 if you would like to volunteer. Haynes Materials and Oxford Paint and Hardware have been extremely supportive of this project. Funds have also been provided by the Greater Foundation of New Haven, Katharine Matthies Foundation ,The Thrall Foundation and our membership drives. The projected cost of the building is approximately $100,000. To date we have raised $63,000 and we hope to save substantial money by utilizing volunteers for much of the work. We hope our members will have a few hours to contribute toward this worthy community project. Pictures are in the Photo Gallery.
| Volunteer Help Needed. |
|
We can only achieve success if individuals continue to step forward to assist in our programs. We need volunteers to help with our December fireworks and visit from Santa. There are also a number of annual events that a helpful hand is welcome at. We encourage everyone to donate a little of your time to help the Seymour Land Trust continue to offer our members and general public access to our facilities and events. Please visit our Volunteer Contact Page for more information on how to participate.
