January, 2010

Dear Friends and Neighbors:

Here we are again, beginning another new year.  If you’ve been a member of the Seymour Land Trust in past years, we hope that you will consider joining again for 2010.  If you haven’t joined us before, please consider doing so when you receive this letter.

The types of membership are:  Individual – which means a membership for just one person – at a cost of $20; Family – which would cover yourself, your spouse, any children under the age of 16, as well as your grandchildren – for $30; Lifetime – which makes you a member for the balance of your life – for $500.

We’ve gotten requests from people wishing to give a membership to friends and relatives as Christmas gifts.  Perhaps you might consider doing the same as a gift to someone who would enjoy being a member of the Land Trust.  An avid fisherman or a nature lover would really appreciate your thoughtfulness in introducing him/her/them to the peace and serenity of our lovely park and pond.

Membership in our organization includes fishing privileges at Legion Pool, which is stocked with trout.  It is strictly a “catch and release” fishing facility.  You must be a Land Trust member in order to use our newly renovated Henry Hamel Environmental Building for your family functions.  For more information, contact Ann Conroy at 888-6968.

During July and August we will be having free movie nights at dusk on Saturday evening, with free popcorn to Land Trust members.  Also, we will be giving a discount to Seymour Land Trust members who bring their membership card to the registration desk at the annual Halloween Haunted Trail.  Other upcoming projects which are being considered are possibly having a wi-fi connection at the park at Legion Pool.  Another project which is being looked into is allowing members to use the bathrooms in the rear of the environmental building by having a code system of some sort on the doors.  This would allow members who are enjoying the park to also have the use of the facilities.

The Seymour Land Trust is committed to enhancing the quality of life in our community.  We achieve this by fostering partnerships with our local government, businesses, local non-profit organizations, developers and the people in our small community.  The events we sponsor throughout the year, like our 20th annual fishing festival which this year will be on May 14 (class) and 15, 2010, in honor of Francis Gauvin, one of our most dedicated volunteers who just passed away.  The Halloween Haunted Trail Festival will be held on Columbus Day weekend (possibly for two nights) and Santa’s visit and fireworks in December are made possible by our dedicated team of volunteers, including the Seymour Police Department, Citizens Engine Co. #2, Seymour Ambulance Association, and by local businesses that make donations to cover the majority of the expenses involved.  For updates on Seymour Land Trust activities, check out our website at www.seymourlandtrust.org.  We also have a page on Facebook now.

As you may have seen, we have put on a new addition to the Henry Hamel Environmental Building.  The project was begun with proceeds from a grant received from the Greater  New Haven Foundation.  However, your yearly membership dues will help to cover some of the remaining costs which will be incurred in the completion of the indoor portion of this addition.  The additional space will provide an educational center for events that host the general public as well as handicapped individuals who are only able to attend in wheelchairs.  The extra space will also provide some room for the equipment and supplies used for the constant upkeep of our parks.  Any additional donations toward the completion of the new addition to the building would be more than welcome.  Remember, donations are tax deductible to the full extent provided by law.

Veteran’s Park at the corner of Pearl and Day Streets is a recreational park for seniors, the handicapped, and the general public.  The gazebo has been built and the bocce court is installed.  We’re hoping to start a bocce league at that location.  If you know of anyone who might be interested in either being in charge of a league or in joining one of the teams, please let us know.  More information on that will be forthcoming – in the newspapers and on our website.  If you have an interest in this project, either send an e-mail to our website:  seymourlandtrust.org, or drop a note to

P. O. Box 366, Seymour.  Please include a phone number where you can be reached.

We believe residents in our community deserve some quality recreational and educational projects.  Your financial assistance will help us to achieve this goal.  We are a non-profit organization as defined under IRS Code 501C3.  Therefore, your membership dues are tax-deductible.  The Land Trust remains committed to our goal to make life more pleasant and enjoyable for you and your family.  We  rely exclusively on volunteers, donations and grants to support our organization.  No tax dollars are used to subsidize the Land Trust.  We privately own the areas in which our parks reside and we do not receive any funds from the town or the State.  Every dollar we receive is from our annual membership dues, grants or donations, and is used for material, equipment, and providing services for the general public, as well as handicapped citizens.

We are all volunteers serving our community.  The officers, board of directors, and dedicated volunteers do not receive any kind of salary for the time they spend being involved with Land Trust activities.  We all do it because we care and enjoy serving our community.  Anyone wishing to join in to help out is always welcome!  If you have some free time and would like to get involved in a very good cause, please join our group of volunteers.  There is always something to be done at the park, on the trails, and in the building.  For more information, please call Alex Danka at (203) 881-3400 or e-mail him at alexdanka@sbcglobal.net.

Your donation and support are very important.  Checks should be made payable to the Seymour Land Trust and returned in the enclosed self-addressed envelope.

Thank you for your consideration to our request.

                                                Sincerely,

The Officers, Board of Directors, and Volunteers

of the Seymour Land Conservation Trust, Inc.
