Oxford Land Trust hike



In an effort to stay connected to our neighboring land trusts, the OLT is inviting current & past Seymour Land Trust BOD to a hike on the 45 acre OLT Katharine Matthies property in Oxford. ( Good Hill Rd. ) The hike will be he on June 11, @ 10 am - 12 noon. ( rain date; June 12, 2 pm - 4 pm ) Bring snacks, beverage, insect repellant, & good walking shoes. Directions: From the rotary near the Great Hill Methodist Church in Seymour, take rt. 188 north for about 3.5 miles to Barry Rd. which will be on your left along side the Quaker Farms Volunteer fire dept. Go about 1 mile to a stop sign & take a left onto Bowers Hill Rd. Go about .5 miles on Bowers Hill Rd. & at the fork in the road, bear right onto Good Hill Rd. Proceed up Good Hill Rd. about .5 miles passing the OLT K.M. property which will be on your left, & turn right onto White Gate Rd. & park your car along the beginning of White Gate Rd. Then, walk back down Good hill Rd about 100 yards to the trail Head of the OLT Katharine Matthies property. We look forward to hiking with you & catching up on news & stories ! Hope to see you there. April Quarterly Membership Meeting

The Seymour Land Conservation Trust, Inc. will be holding its quarterly membership meeting on Monday, April 18 at 7:00 p.m. in the Henry Hamel Building, 13 Chatfield Street, Seymour, CT. The speaker for the meeting will be Professor Gary A. Robbins, Professor of Geology, Department of Natural Resources and the Environment at the University of Connecticut (UConn) in Storrs. Learn about how Connecticut's foundation of rock formed and changed over and over again through the ages and its importance to us today. The topic should be of interest to everyone after recent events in Japan. Dr. Robbins is well known for his research and teaching on Ground Water Hydrology. He has also been a consultant to Federal, state and local environmental agencies throughout the Country, including a number of towns in Connecticut. He has been at the University of Connecticut for 25 years. His current research focuses on deciphering ground water conditions in bedrock. Before coming to the University he worked for an environmental consulting company in California on a variety of projects related to ground water contamination. Before that he was a Project Geologist with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and worked on power plant foundation and earthquake design, and nuclear waste disposal. The meeting is free of charge and open to the general public.

Several hundred memberships have already been processed and from the first postmarked 150, we have randomly picked the lucky member who will be receiving a free hall rental. He is James Hayes of Seymour. Congratulations to the Hayes family!!

Quarterly Meeting Monday Jan 17th 2011

The Seymour Land Trust will be holding its quarterly membership meeting on Monday, January 17, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. in the Henry Hamel Environmental Building, 13 Chatfield Street, Seymour. A representative of CL&P/Yankee Gas will be the guest speaker. Attendees will be involved by playing Energy Bingo. Energy Bingo is a part of CL&P and Yankee Gas's ongoing energy conservation efforts. It was developed to help customers identify ways to reduce their energy consumption and lower their bills. Participants have fun playing bingo while receiving information on energy conservation tips and safety. As bingo numbers are called, tips about energy conservation, home safety, power outages and home security are discussed. Energy and safety related prizes will be awarded. The general public is welcome to attend.



Santa's Visit to the Land Trust

Santa arrived at the land trust on Sat Dec 11th amid a flurry of fireworks. He saw many smiling faces both inside and outside among the beautifully decorated trees. A big thanks to Santa's elves Joe, Frankie, Monica, Kym and Justin for all the decorations! Merry Xmas everyone!

SEYMOUR LAND TRUST QUARTERLY MEMBERSHIP MEETING

The Seymour Land Trust will be holding its quarterly membership meeting on Monday, October 18, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. in the Henry Hamel Environmental Building, 13 Chatfield Street, Seymour. The guest speaker will be Andy Todd, who will be presenting his snakes to the audience. The general public is welcome to attend.

Andy Todd has been living/working with animals since he was old enough to go outside in the backyard and turn over rocks. Although frogs and salamanders were fascinating, nothing could compare to the thrill of catching a snake. Over the years, Andy has had the opportunity to study and work with numerous species of snakes, including boas, pythons, pit vipers, and various colubrids. Andy currently works at Earthplace, a nature center in Westport, CT, where he is an Animal Care Technician for dozens of animals. Here he has the opportunity to interact with and care for many species on a daily basis. Andy is also a photography professor at Paier College of Art in Hamden, CT, where he graduated from with a B.F.A. in photography in 2008.

Halloween Festival meeting every Tues at 7pm

There will be a meeting every Tues at the environmental center at 7pm for anyone interested in being involved in the Halloween Festival. Anyone wishing to set up a scene or help out in any way please attend the meeting. See you all there!!

Legion Pool is being dredged

Legion Pool is being dredged and will be closed for fishing for the next week or two. Please bear with us during this process as it will provide for better fishing in the years to come! Thank you for your patience.

Tonight's Movie Night, July 31st is cancelled.

The movie night scheduled for tonight July 31st is cancelled due to a death in the family of the people who run it. BROTHER BEAR will be shown next week August 7. Please join us then.

Fishing Rodeo postponed

The annual fishing festival which was planned for May, is being postponed until August or September. The pond will be dredged in July or August. This will allow for a much more exciting fishing festival. Hope to see you all there.
